1854/1894/1895/336/R95
For Smith & Wesson 1854, Marlin 336/1894/1895, and Rossi R95 Models
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
Before beginning installation:
- Ensure the firearm is completely unloaded
- Open the action and visually inspect the chamber
- Verify the magazine tube is empty
- Remove all live ammunition from the workspace
- Wear eye protection
Tools Required
- T20 Torx Driver (or appropriate buttstock screw driver)
- 5/64″ Allen Key
- Small magnetic driver (recommended)
Included Hardware
Your receiver plug kit includes:
- Receiver Plug
- Detent Ball
- Reuse Factory Spring
- Reuse Factory Retaining Set Screw
Installation Instructions
Step 1 – Verify Firearm is Unloaded
Before starting:
- Open the action.
- Verify the chamber is empty.
- Remove all ammunition from the firearm and work area.
DISASSEMBLY
Step 2 – Remove Buttstock
Using the appropriate driver:
- Remove the buttstock screw.
- Pull the buttstock rearward and remove it from the receiver.
- Set the buttstock aside.
NOTE
If equipped with a Ranger Point Precision Quick Takedown Screw, remove it in place of the factory buttstock screw.
Step 3 – Position Hammer
For easier access:
- Place the hammer in either the half-cock or full-cock position.
- Ensure the hammer is clear of the receiver plug area.
Step 4 – Remove Factory Receiver Plug
Using a 5/64″ Allen key:
- Remove the factory retaining set screw.
- Carefully capture the spring beneath the screw.
- Remove the factory receiver plug.
IMPORTANT
Do not lose:
- Factory retaining set screw
- Factory spring
The kit includes a replacement detent ball, but the factory spring and retaining screw will be reused.
INSTALLATION
Step 5 – Install Receiver Plug
Orient the receiver plug correctly:
- Smooth side faces the non-ejection port side.
- Grooved side faces the ejection port side.
- Groove faces rearward toward the detent ball and spring.
- Insert the receiver plug into the receiver from the bottom.
- Hold the plug fully seated during installation.
Step 6 – Install Detent Ball and Spring
- Insert the supplied detent ball into the detent hole.
- Reinstall the factory spring behind the detent ball.
IMPORTANT
Maintain pressure on the receiver plug while installing the ball and spring to prevent parts from becoming dislodged.
Step 7 – Reinstall Retaining Set Screw
Using the factory retaining set screw:
- Start the screw carefully by hand.
- Tighten until secure.
IMPORTANT
Do not overtighten the retaining screw.
The detent ball should provide positive retention while allowing the receiver plug to function properly.
REASSEMBLY
Step 8 – Reinstall Buttstock
- Slide the buttstock onto the receiver.
- Ensure it is fully seated.
- Reinstall the buttstock screw or Ranger Point Precision Quick Takedown Screw.
- Tighten securely.
Final Inspection
Before use:
- Verify the receiver plug is fully seated.
- Verify the retaining screw is secure.
- Confirm the buttstock is fully installed.
- Cycle the action to verify proper firearm function.
Installation is now complete.
