Installation Instructions

For Ranger Point Precision Smith & Wesson 1854 rifles

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

Before beginning installation:

• Ensure the firearm is completely unloaded
• Open the action and visually inspect the chamber
• Verify the magazine tube is empty
• Remove all live ammunition from the workspace
• Wear eye protection

Tools Required

• T10 Torx driver
• Included Allen keys
• Blue or Purple Loctite
• Torque Wrench

Torque Specifications

Use a calibrated inch-pound torque wrench whenever possible.

Thread Locker

Apply Blue (242) or Purple (222) Loctite to all mounting screws unless otherwise specified.

Important

• Handguard set screws for alignment.
• Set screws should only lightly contact the barrel.
• Overtightening set screws can affect handguard alignment and damage threads.
• Verify handguard alignment before applying final torque.
• Allow the thread locker to cure before firing.

Your handguard package includes:

• S&W 1854 M-LOK Handguard
• (2) Mounting screws
• (4) Set screws
• (2) Allen keys

• Threaded 10-32 sling stud mounting point
• Lightweight aluminum construction

Before You Begin

Verify Correct Handguard Orientation

Locate the “S” marking on the handguard.

This marking identifies the handguard as the Smith & Wesson 1854 model.

IMPORTANT:

• Open end faces the muzzle
• Flanged end faces the receiver

If installed backward, the mounting holes will not align properly.

Installation Instructions

Step 1 – Verify Firearm is Unloaded

Before starting:

1. Open the action
2. Visually inspect the chamber
3. Verify the firearm is unloaded
4. Remove all ammunition from the work area

Step 2 – Remove Magazine Tube

1. Unscrew the magazine tube cap
2. Withdraw the magazine tube from the rifle
3. Set aside

No tools are required for this step.

Step 3 – Remove Factory End Cap

Using a T10 Torx driver:

1. Remove the first end cap screw
2. Remove the second end cap screw
3. Remove the factory end cap

Set all factory hardware aside for safekeeping.

Step 4 – Remove Factory Handguard

1. Pull the factory handguard away from the barrel
2. Remove from the rifle

NOTE:

The factory tenon remains installed and will be reused during installation.

Step 5 – Apply Thread Locker

Apply a small amount of:

• Purple Loctite (recommended)
• Blue Loctite (acceptable alternative)

To:

• Both mounting screws
• All four set screws

IMPORTANT:

Do NOT use red Loctite.

Step 6 – Install Handguard

1. Orient the handguard correctly:
   • Open end toward muzzle
   • Flanged end toward receiver
2. Insert the receiver flange into the receiver
3. Tilt the handguard upward toward the barrel
4. Align the mounting holes with the factory tenon

The handguard should seat fully without force.

Step 7 – Reinstall Magazine Tube

1. Insert the magazine tube through the rear of the handguard
2. Fully seat the magazine tube into position

This helps align the handguard and tenon before hardware installation.

Step 8 – Install Mounting Screws

Using the supplied Allen key:

1. Install one mounting screw on each side of the handguard
2. Insert screws through the larger mounting holes
3. Thread into the factory tenon

IMPORTANT:

• Install one oval washer under each mounting screw
• Orient each oval washer so the offset hole is closer to the bottom of the handguard
• Tighten lightly only at this stage

Do not apply final torque yet.

Step 9 – Install Set Screws

Install all four set screws:

Front Set Screws

• Located directly above the mounting screws
• Thread straight inward

Rear Set Screws

• Located near the receiver
• Thread inward at an angle

IMPORTANT:

• Start all four screws before tightening
• If resistance is felt, stop and verify alignment
• Do not cross-thread the screws

Step 10 – Center the Handguard

Visually inspect the gap between the handguard and barrel at the muzzle end.

Adjust until:

• Equal gap exists on both sides
• Handguard appears centered and parallel to the barrel

This alignment should be completed before final tightening.

Step 11 – Tighten Set Screws

Tighten the four set screws evenly until they just contact the barrel.

Torque Specification: Hand Tight Only

The purpose of these screws is to:

• Maintain handguard alignment
• Prevent movement
• Keep the handguard centered on the barrel

Do not overtighten.

Step 12 – Final Tightening

With the handguard centered:

1. Tighten both handguard mounting screws evenly.
2. Verify the handguard remains centered around the barrel.
3. Recheck all four set screws.

Torque Specifications:

• RPP Mounting Screws: 10 in-lbs
• Factory S&W 1854 Tenon Screws: 8 in-lbs (if removed/reinstalled)

Allow thread locker to cure per manufacturer recommendations before use.

MAS & Gator Rail Installation

The MAS system utilizes one or two Gator Rails mounted to the top of the handguard.

Step 13 – Position Gator Rail

1. Determine the desired Gator Rail location.
2. Place the Gator Rail into the mounting pocket on top of the handguard.
3. Verify orientation before installing hardware.

NOTE

• Most users will orient the Gator Rail toward the muzzle.
• A second Gator Rail may be installed in the forward position if desired.

Step 14 – Install Gator Rail Mounting Screws

1. Position the Gator Rail onto the handguard.
2. Install the four supplied large-head mounting screws.
3. Start all screws by hand.
4. Verify the Gator Rail sits flush against the handguard.

IMPORTANT

• Do not cross-thread the screws.
• Test fit all hardware before applying thread locker.

Recommended:

1. Install all four screws dry.
2. Verify proper fitment.
3. Remove one screw at a time.
4. Apply Purple or Blue Loctite.
5. Reinstall the screw.

Step 15 – Install Jack Screws

The four jack screws install directly behind the mounting screws.

1. Install all four jack screws.
2. Tighten until they lightly contact the handguard mounting surface.

IMPORTANT

Do not overtighten.

The mounting screws and jack screws work against one another to securely clamp the Gator Rail to the handguard.

Step 16 – Final Tightening

After confirming alignment:

• Gator Rail Mounting Screws — Hand Tight
• Jack Screws — Hand Tight

IMPORTANT

• Apply Blue or Purple Loctite to the mounting screws.
• Do not overtighten.
• Excessive torque may damage aluminum threads.
• Verify the Gator Rail remains seated flush against the handguard.

Final Inspection

Before use:

• Verify all screws are secure
• Confirm handguard is centered
• Ensure magazine tube is fully seated
• Cycle the action to verify proper function
• Confirm no interference between handguard and barrel

Installation is now complete.

Optional S&W 1854 Buttstock Installation

If installing an RPP S&W 1854 Buttstock:

Tools Required

• T20 Torx driver

Installation

1. Remove the factory upper tang screw
2. Slide the RPP buttstock onto the rear tang
3. Tap gently into place if necessary
4. Reinstall the tang screw
5. Tighten securely

Installation is complete.
